Not necessarily. It is important that you get seed to soil contact so if you can get the seed into the soil by using herbicides to burn down the existing plants and then either through frost seeding or with hand tools and other methods then you can be successful.  I always use a shoulder style bag spreader for seeding food plots, it gives you more control on seed populations and is efficient and inexpensive. Tractors and heavy equipment are great though! Use em if you have them!

Both! Perennial plots can come back for many years to come if maintained properly and they tend to be better for herd health and soil health as well as saving you all the work of planting and preparing every year so I usually suggest you plant 60% to 80% of your plot land into Perennials. Annual food plots though can be very good at attracting wildlife and doing it during hunting seasons in the Fall. It depends a little bit on your wildlife population but for the most part I like ¼ acre to ¾ acre sized plots and even if you have high animal pressure I would rather see you plant more small, irregular shaped plots than planting big, square open fields of food plots. If you have to plant larger , open areas because that’s your only option , use a product like our Deer Blind (annual) screen mix or our Wildlife Habitat( perennial) mix to have tall, winding borders to those plots so the wildlife feels secluded and comfortable browsing and bedding on your land.

It really does! There are many types of wildlife seeds and many different varieties within those types, for instance with medium red clover, a common variety may only last 1 year, the varieties we are using have been lasting 4 years or longer and with White clover a common variety may only grow to 6 or 8 inches tall and have a relatively low feed value compared to the improved varieties of White and Ladino clovers that we use in our mixs that can more than double the tonnage produced by the common varieties and have higher protein and feed value! After all the hard work you put into acquiring the land, spraying, working, amending, fertilizing, preparing the soil and then planting, the last thing you want is common, cheap seed  to turn all of that work into a mediocre or failed plot. Spend a few dollars more and get good quality, improved variety seeds from a trusted seed brand like Midwest Wildlife Zone.
