Black oil sunflower seed: Black oil sunflower seed is a preferred food item for a wide variety of birds. It is high in energy and has thin shells, making it a favorite of cardinals, chickadees, titmice, finches, and woodpeckers.

Hulled sunflower seed: Hulled seeds are simply sunflower seeds with the shell removed; which provides less mess at your feeder. The combination of high nutritional value with ease of consumption makes hulled sunflower a favorite of all seed eating birds.

Cracked corn: Corn is an inexpensive grain that will attract ground-eating birds like doves, quail, and sparrows.

Millet: Millet is a favored food of many smaller, ground foraging birds.
Milo Milo is favored by ground-feeding birds like sparrows, doves, quail, wild turkeys, towhees and jays.

Peanuts: Peanuts are a rich source of protein and fats and are valuable for birds all year round. They can be offered as whole or shelled peanuts, or even peanut butter. Peanuts will attract larger birds like jays and woodpeckers and smaller birds like chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice. Avoid salted peanuts or peanuts that have been roasted with any coatings or flavorings.

Safflower: These somewhat bitter, white seeds are especially popular with cardinals and grosbeaks. Safflower is high in protein, fiber, and fat. Offering safflower is a great way to deter larger bully birds such as grackles and starlings that sometimes monopolize bird feeders, as these birds don’t tend to care for safflower. As a bonus, squirrels do not like safflower and will leave your feeder alone.

Nyjer (thistle) seed: A small, black seed that is rich in fat and has a high oil content. Nyjer is a favorite of finches including American goldfinches, purple finches, pine siskins, and common redpolls. With its small size it will require a special type of seed feeder.

Most bird seed is not sterilized, so there is a possibility of the seeds sprouting when they fall. The only exception to this is Nyjer, which is sterilized and will not germinate. To prevent this we recommend placing a tray below the bird feeders to catch the seed or periodically cleaning up under your feeder to prevent seed to soil contact.

You’re not doing anything wrong. It may take some time for birds to locate a new feeding source. A spell of bad weather always drives birds to concentrate at feeders. Try moving your feeder to a new location far from your house, away from dogs or cats and away from a heavily used area. Put the feeder in or near a tree that the birds regularly use. If there is not a source of cover for birds it will take them longer to find and use your feeders. Make sure you are using the correct type of feeder for the birds you are trying to attract and for the seed you are feeding.
